things to never get involved in

Started freehanding a desk tonight to mount to the wall in the future office. Some of the cuts aren’t perfect, but I wasn’t too careful marking it up, and didn’t take any measurements except for height from floor. I plan to fill in the gaps and either paint it black, or cover it in whiteboard paint. I’ll add 2×2 legs to the front edges (possibly a file cabinet on the left side). Leaving just enough of a gap to allow the closet door to open and will put the network rack into the closet. It pretty closely mirrors Lynda’s desk and will give me room on the right side to use as a writing surface. It would have been better from one piece of plywood, but I’m using scraps that I used to cover windows for the hurricane last year (from the same sheet I originally made Lynda’s desk from, actually, and it was vaguely desk-shaped before I chopped it up).

Edit 3/31/17: additional progress. desk is now assembled and I’ve cut everything down. Added Particle board on top of the plywood to both strengthen it and give it a smoother surface. Need to neatly round off the edges (yay router!), sand, seal everything and paint it.

Edit 4/1/17: sanded all of the surfaces down, and cut off the screw ends that were protruding from the bottom. Removed a couple of the front face screws and filled with more wood filler. Added wood filler over the pocket screw holes that are visible. Also washed the mop, it was pretty well saturated with sawdust and will be needed again soon. next up, priming.

Edit 4/1/17 #2: needs some finishing touches-some molding or edge banding around the edges, some framework around the whiteboard, and something to the inside of the cabinet and underside. Most likely will coat it with something and add some graphic work, but it’s basically done now.

Edit 4/1/17 #3: cable management may be ugly for a little bit, and this temporary chair is just a little too short for it to be comfortable. Everything is set up now (including speakers and security cameras). I’ve got to re-do all of my ethernet to this room, but for now I’m just using a second router as a bridge.

Edit 4/2/17: Got Lynda’s desk moved into this room. Yup, wires are a mess, but everything is working. Lost a few hours playing through new WoW content, and suddenly the day was almost over. The desk seems to work for what it was intended.

Edit 4/3/17: after test-fitting LED strip lights around the whiteboard, it looks like i need to wire the desk and install a light switch or dimmer…pretty cool.

Edit 4/15/17: haven’t done any more work on wiring, but added a 36″ pull-out drawer to put my keyboard and mouse on. may end up doing a deeper drawer (using an 8″ shelf, and the mouse pad hangs about 1/2″ over the edge. it ends up freeing a whole lot of tabletop space though, so i’m definitely liking it.
