GURPS Kirinioth - Magic

Arcane Magic

  • Elves and Surface Dwarves will be inherently magical.
    • Adamant Dwarves will be able to sense magic, but be unable to use arcane magical spells. They will be capable of engraving runes onto items.
    • Elves will naturally have access to spells related to plants, earth, water and sunlight. Innate magic will take the form of song (in the Dryad language).
    • Surface Dwarves will naturally have access to spells related to earth and metal. May need to think some more on this one.
    • Innate magic will use fatigue rather than threshold magic. Innate users can still get and use Mana tattoos to use other types of magic, but will be able to use fatigue in addition to threshold.
  • Humans will require tattoos to use arcane magics.
    • These will bind leylines to the user, but will be limited to how much skin surface area they are willing to devote to binding tattoos.
    • The tattoos will be aspected to a specific type of magic, and using that binding will provide mana of that type (similar to lands providing colored magic in MtG). Tapping into these leylines will cause temporary damage to the tattooed area.
    • Aspected mana will be more potent casting spells of that type, while opposing types of mana may have side effects or hindrances.
  • Arcane magic will be governed by Threshold-Limited Magic from Thaumatology (pp. 76-82).
    • Threshold will be equivalent to 2 x Power2/15 and Recovery will be equivalent to Power2/15. Both Threshold and Recovery will only be able to be modified by buying Power up or down.
    • Maximum mana spent per turn will equal Threshold-7 (alternatively, this may be based on number of mana tattoos).
    • For spellcasting purposes, Humans will be capped at Power = 10+ num mana tattoos. they will be able to purchase more Power, but for purposes of Threshold and Recovery will be capped. Maximum Mana will be calculated without the cap.
  • Will reorganize colleges, possibly separating spells into verbs and nouns.

That's a start. I think Divine magic will also use Threshold-Limited Magic, but be based on Power Investiture. The numbers for that will be lower than with Arcane magic (I'm thinking 0-5 or 0-10 max), but will have more potent effects for a small number of points. Recovery times are also likely to take longer, especially with the current state of the gods all being bound.
