GURPS Kirinioth Life Path Character Generation Brainstorm

May 19, 2020

I want to create a system that will be of use in character generation, with a focus on lowering the entry barrier to new players. Most of the GURPS character templates already are designed to do this, but my plan is to eliminate the need for choices involving number manipulation ("choose 30 points of advantages from the following").

This would be somewhat inspired by the GURPS Action 4 Specialists release, but would have more starting choice available. There would be a background template, but aside from the choice of selecting a background, there would be no additional choices within that template. It might give a set of attributes, advantages, disadvantages, etc., and a list of possible life paths that could follow. The background choice would account for the largest chunk of points, with life path choices probably coming in at 25 or 50 points each.

Life path choices could range be things like events or careers that shaped the character, with repeat selections being available, as appropriate. If a character has spent their entire life doing one trade, it may make sense to select blacksmith several times, with each selection boosting related skills, or possibly the ST attribute. Following the example of a blacksmith, maybe there is a journeyman and master choice available, with the Fit or Very Fit advantage being bundled. A noble background might open up paths of knighthood or statecraft. There could be events available for inheritance or being disowned and exiled.

The first thing I'll want to do is go through the Fantasy and Banestorm templates and find any usable backgrounds that can be used, and then follow up by looking through the career types of templates. It might be appropriate to include some quirks in certain life paths, but if I were to do that, I'd want to plan on having a character select a background along with five paths to make up their starting points, and each path would include a quirk. I'm not sure if I like that idea, so I may leave quirks open like normal and have them included in the points allocation for the background template. I'll have to think on that.
