GURPS Kirinioth - Attributes Revisted

September 16, 2020

As I've been looking over the different magic systems in Thaumatology, I read through the Power-Ups 3 - Talents document. Rather than breaking attributes up, I'm beginning to consider using talents instead. Now, I feel DX and IQ are under-priced, but I don't really want to bump the price significantly. I think a happy medium would be to cap each at 13, while using the standard 20 points/level. Then attributes would be supplemented by talents. Instead of the IQ sub stats of creativity and logic, I'd have more specialized talents that would augment a character's ability. The Bard talent on page 6 of the Talents document boosts Heraldry, Literature, Musical Influence, Poetry, Public Speaking and Singing. That covers the bard concept pretty well. With this talent, a character could easily take a level or two of IQ, and then augment it with a few levels of Bard. Four levels of Bard would equal one level of IQ. It's more focused, covers the concept, and is more cost-effective than boosting IQ.

The Dwarf talent Pick-Axe Penchant from the Dungeon Fantasy series gives bonuses to mining, as well as using the Axe/Mace skill. This gives a Dwarf character a nice skill boost with traditional Dwarven weapons (and skills), but without the necessity of boosting DX (not something that is normally associated with Dwarves anyhow). Explorer, which gives boosts to Area Knowledge, Cartography, Geography, Mathematics (Surveying) and Navigation can be used to represent a natural navigator or a Ranger without having to buy up costly IQ. Outdoorsman is an ideal choice for a reclusive hermit with no education, but a knack for living off the land.

I may still split up attributes, but I think Talents are worth considering either way. They're not a new concept to GURPS, but one I hadn't really considered or familiarized myself with until recently. Consider me a fan.
