GURPS Kirinioth - Attributes

December 18, 2019

I'm still fiddling, and have yet to do any sort of validation or testing, but I think I've more or less settled on my attribute spread/break-up. DX and IQ each get split into multiple attributes, and Speed and Move both gain new derivation formulas. I started off by looking at Kromm's spreads that he mentioned in the SJGames GURPS forum post about the Power-Ups 9: Alternate Attributes supplement. Kromm mentioned boosting the cost for HT (which I've done here), but I may drop that back to the standard 10/level (which would make for greater symmetry between the body and mind realms as well).

I've started a spreadsheet to split up skills amongst the attributes, but there's a lot more to think about there. I'm going for something of a Dungeon Fantasy game, and while tempted to just go through the Dungeon Fantasy books, they do strip a lot of stuff out that I think I'd prefer to leave in. I don't want this to pure DF. That will make filtering through advantages, disadvantages, etc., a whole lot more work, but I think I'd still rather go that route. I also don't want to keep the starting power level equivalent to 250 points. I think I'll be aiming for a 150-point feel. It's already at +65 character points for a comparable character without additional attributes, but we'll see where we end up. 200 might be a good starting point.

edit 12/24/19: The symmetry was too much to overcome for me! I've changed HT to 10 points/level. I've also updated the Attributes and Secondary Characteristics with their abbreviations and reformatted the points/level cost for each. I haven't begun working on Magic or Faith systems yet, so it's possible that Power, Power Points and Faith Points are all revised once those are completed. I do plan to keep divine powers as something less-frequently called upon than arcane magic (thus the zero starting point).

edit 2/1/20: I might change some of the attribute names to differentiate the two-letter abbreviations a little better. I'm considering Grace in place of Charm or Imagination in place of Creativity. Power and Will abbreviations may need some adjustment too, PW vs. WP could be easy to confuse. Hit Points (HP) could be changed to Body Points (BP) and I could change Power Points (PP) to Mind Points (MP). These would fall in line with the HeroQuest scores nicely. I had a vision of using Faith Points, but I think I may eliminate that secondary characteristic altogether now that I'm reconsidering the use of Divine Magic.

edit 2/23/20: Magic is starting to come together, and I'm heavily leaning toward doing something with Threshold-Limited magic. That will eliminate the need for Power points and Faith points. That will also get rid of some of the overly-similar abbreviations. I might resort to 3-letter abbreviations for Perception (Per) and Power (Pow).
